Tying Heartstrings: Summer Fun Things to Do
Posted By Jacque Dixon on August 2, 2009 in Categories: Home Schooling, Mothering, Tying Heartstrings
With Summer here, there are loads of things for mothers and daughters to do together! Each activity gives us opportunity to share not just time with our daughters, but our lives and our God Yehovah and His plans for us. Don’t ever miss an opportunity to share the Lord with your own children!
Here are some of the things we like to do together:
Gardening
What a wonderful time together! Whether you are caring for a container garden on your porch are a huge backyard garden, there is so much to learn and talk about as you garden. I have found that there are so many opportunities to notice God and to bring up His Word as you work the soil, plant the seeds, and then pull weeds, deal with bugs, and, in our case, chickens! – and then you get to work together to pull in the harvest of all the work and time you put into it.
Plant flowers
If you don’t care to do a vegetable garden, you can always buy some flowers to plant together around your yard or in containers. Planting flowers is something that can be done with any age daughter, and is so enjoyable to see the end results.
Take A Walk
My daughters and I love to walk. A nice summer morning or evening is a great time to spend that time outdoors walking. No matter the age of your daughter/s, the time walking can be spent talking about life and how our God Yehovah fits into it, and how we can live each day and moment in Him. There are opportunities to notice the beauty of his creation, the effects of sin, and just building the parent/ daughter relationship that God has given each of you. When our girls were younger, I used to walk with them, pushing them in the stroller, singing to and with them their favourite Bible songs and hymns.
Scrapbooking is always in season!
We love to get out our supplies and leave them out for a few days and work on our scrapbooks together. Reminiscing about the photos and remembering fun times is such a great way to tie hearts together!
Read a Book Together
I know this is something that any mother of Littles already knows, but what about your older daughter? Can you choose a book to read together and discuss? How about a book of the Bible to read together and share what you learn? Grab a blanket, go out in the shade and read to your Little one!
Visit Grandparents
My children – and my grandparents – love to spend time together. however, it hasn’t always been like that. There was a time when my Grandmother asked me to not bring more than a couple of my children to her house at a time. They were good enough, but she couldn’t handle it. She later apologized, and asked that I bring them all over, because they so enjoy being with them!
Take a Swimming Safety Class together
One summer, I took all of our children to swimming lessons at the Y. We love to get in the little kiddie pool and splash around now, but, oh, if we had a cool pool to get into… we would really enjoy that!
Go to the Park Together
Going to the park was one of my favourite things to do when I was younger. We had a really nice park near my Grandma’s, and they had craft projects and a nice place to ride my bike. We love to play tennis, and our local park has a nice tennis area that is not ever too crowded, so we enjoy going down and taking over a few courts!
Plan Home School Together
It’s time to get books together and make the plans for next year. While the older girls can help with ideas, planning and ordering, the younger girls no doubt will love being involved in the plans for her new school year and what she will be learning.
Play Yard Games
Hide and Seek, Catch, Croquet, swinging on a swingset with Mom pushing. These are fun things for Littles to do with each other, older siblings or parents.
Picnic Lunches
Lunches or even snacks outside on a blanket are fun for children any age! Have your daughters pick out the menu or at least one favourite and even help you to prepare it if you like!
Go Camping
To have fun camping, you really don’t have to be the outdoors-y type. Camping is a lot of fun, in a tent, a travel trailer or a cabin. We have slept outside in a tent with 8 of us, with toddlers, older children, nursing babies. We have camped in our own yard, but there are other places that you can go and rent a spot for not very much. Working together to set up camp, cook and clean, building a fire together, sitting around talking about family and our God Yehovah, and all the other things that are so important to our lives, singing worship songs and silly songs together, is an experience that always brings us closer together.
So, now that I have made this list, and I actually feel like staying home most of the time, I know my girls – and boys - are going to wonder what we can start with to do together!
What are some things you and your daughters/mother do together in the Summer time?
