Making the Home: Vinegar Disinfectant
Posted By Jacque Dixon on September 18, 2009 in Categories: Making The Home
Germs, illness, Influenza. All things we have to be worried about in our homes. We disinfect countertops, toilets, floors, hands, mattresses, and anywhere that germs could be harboured. A friend of mine always reminds me to disinfect the door knobs and light switch plates when we are ill.
Because we no longer use store-bought cleansers and disinfectants, we had to find something that was a good natural disinfectant. Our disinfectant of choice is vinegar. The site below said that regular white vinegar is best, which is good to know, because we always have used Apple Cider Vinegar.
Vinegar Facts (found here):
In ancient times, Roman soldiers would add vinegar to their drinking water to kill the germs in it.
In the Middle Ages people used vinegar as a disinfectant to combat many diseases including the dreaded bubonic plague.
Throughout the American civil war and right up to the first world war, soldiers used ACV as a disinfectant to clean and disinfect wounds.
Research also shows that “spraying a surface or the food with vinegar (5% acetic acid) and hydrogen peroxide (3%) killed virtually all Salmonella, Shigella, and E. Coli bacteria present on surfaces.”
We use Aple Cider Vinegar for many things in our home. As a disinfectant is only one of its great uses!
Now, the scent of vinegar is one that my dear husband is none too fond of, so I try not to use it when he is home. I dilute my vinegar with water in a spray bottle, and I also add some essential oils to it. I have added Tea Tree Oil (which has disinfectant properties of its own) and geranium oil. I also like the Lavendar and the Eucalyptus, but haven’t added those yet.
I do not measure my mix. I pretty much can tell if it is dark enough.
So, if you want a non-toxic and easy to use disinfectant, get some Apple Cider Vinegar and a spray bottle and have at it!

Yeah we use vinegar when we don’t want to use store bought cleaners too. I agree it does stink. LOL

This is a brilliant idea! Something else you might be able to add to make a pleasant smell is lemons – they are acidic and probably help cleanse a little too, and some people love the smell of fresh lemon! Not sure if it would make things sticky because fruit does contain sugars, but maybe the vinegar would help negate the stickiness? Just an idea, never done it myself – just noticed a lot of store-bought cleaning products have citrus fragrances…
By the way, I thought you might be interested to know I’ve started dosing myself on coconut oil because I heard it is supposed to help with fatigue issues. I’m starting with a teaspoon a day, and will slowly increase it to 3-4 tablespoons a day. While taking this smaller amount, I’m just swallowing it down with water (like a pill), but not sure I can tolerate doing that with larger amounts… any advice on good ways to use it in large quantities??

We use virgin coconut oil in a lot of our foods now- as oil and as in baking. We substitute it all we can. I have it in my coffee also. Whenever we can add it in, we do. Spread it on bread. I take honey and ACV with warm water for a cleanse and boost, and I have gotten into adding some VCO to that. It’s easier to get down when it is melted too.
